Tennessee Moon

Neil Diamond Album of the Month

February 1998

Without you beside me, the road is so long.
You live in my heart, and it hurts when I think of you gone.
I need you in my way.
I have no right to love so true.
But let me be the one, the one who lives inside of you.
Just let me be the one you carry deep inside of you.

---Neil Diamond, 1996

Tennessee Moon: Reader’s Comments

There were 154 total participants in this month’s poll -- Here are most of the comments I recieved from the fans........thanks again to all who took part!

My wife and I left home in Winston-Salem, NC at 4 AM that morning to get to the taping. We met friends from Baltimore and Connecticut and attended the afternoon taping, got tickets for the evening taping and stayed to the very end. We stayed overnight and due to business, had to leave the next morning. We realized we spent more time in the Ryman than we did at our hotel. Just the way it should be. Been to lots of concerts, but this topped all of them, since it was smaller, closed, and Neil was so friendly. A tough trip, but we'd do it again without a thought!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I was one of the few lucky ones to tour the Ryman on Sunday while Neil was rehearsing; it was a rare moment to be able to watch him in rehearsal. We were restricted to standing behind the very rear seats in the balcony, but Neil acknowledged us several times and before he left, he told us to go to the Ryman shop and pick out a T-shirt on his account. Of course this will be a treasured souvenir! The taping shows were a great experience too - I attended both and it was wonderful to see him perform in a small space, unlike the big arenas that he usually plays.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

TN Moon is fun and cooperatively creative. It was a pleasure to add this album to my collection! 1.Being invited to watch rehearsal was a dream come true. I have always wanted to watch him work and just be himself. 2.The night some of us were taking a photo with our thank-you banner, he just happened to walk in and dive into our photo! I will never forget this wonderful experience! I hope the taping was as much fun for Neil, and he will want to do another in Music City!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It was so much fun and being in the first row for the first show was awesome. My son of course is the child who claps off beat but he had so much fun.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I attended the Tennessee Moon taping and had so much fun meeting all the people who share the same interest in Neil and his music. Had sooooooo much fun!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

My best general recollection was how great it was to see Neil perform in such a small setting at the Ryman. He was so natural and at ease, yet excited to present his new One of the funniest things to occur was the overzealous woman who just had to tell Neil about Hal Ketchum after the first run through of "Kentucky Woman." The audience was surprised to find out that several entertainers ran down the aisles to the stage at the beginning of "Kentucky Woman." Since this woman was a fan of both men, she was beside herself, talking to Neil rather quickly and excitedly about how he and Hal should duet a certain song by Hal. Neil stood on the edge of the stage, perplexed and trying to listen to the woman. Suddenly from the back of the auditorium, Hal Ketchum came up behind the woman and tapped her on the shoulder. When she turned around and saw him, she literally jumped her seat and threw herself around him. Hal gave her a big ol' bearhug. Neil was on the stage saying deadpanned, "Hal, Hal, put down my guest. Put her down. Get your own TV special, Hal. This is my guest. Hal, Hal..." (Well, I guess you had to be there.) Contrary to Neil's image of being a "solitary man," he has a delicious sense of humor, which showed all during the taping.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Yes, I was one of the "very fortunate" one to be in the audience. You could almost say that this was a "personal performance" everyone dreams of sharing with Neil. It was a wonderful opportunity to see Neil "the man" instead of the "superstar". He was so friendly, chatting with the audience, teasing, joking, just having a wonderful time with all of us. It also gave me an idea of all the work and preparation really does go into the making of a "one-hour" special. More important, it gave me a different perspective of Neil; he was just being himself; accepting directions and input from the producers of the show. It was almost a spiritual experience; there was so much love and emotion being shared during the taping. I came away feeling like I had just been having a good time out with someone I loved and had gotten to know better. There was also a feeling of a deeper bonding, it's difficult to put into words, hard to explain; but, something happened during the taping that words alone can not describe, the many types of emotions felt just can't be explained.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I love it, especially the upbeat songs, not so much the slow songs. I'd like to hear more reggae songs from Neil, there's a reggae type song on Lovescapes that’s great, Lonely Lady #17!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think it's incredible and it always gets me in a good mood when I listen to it!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think this is the third best album by Neil. Ranked just behind "Beautiful Noise" and "The Jazz Singer." I really liked the country flavor on the songs and the duets with the other country singers, especially Waylon Jennings and Raul Malo. Hope he will continue to write with the other country songwriters because I thought their collaborations were very good.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Overall it is a good album. I could listen to anything that Neil sings. He makes my day everyday.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think that Richard Bennett did a fantastic job on the acoustic guitar for the song no limit.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I really like the album. It again shows his versatility in style and range of his composition and presentation of his music and lyrics. It also exposes his personal vulnerability that he was undergoing at the time. One thing about Neil, he is unafraid to show us how human he is. He does so in the lyrics of several songs in this album. It's a pity that he had to endure such emotional pain to give us yet another list of emotionally moving songs. I do favor Optimistic blues. I can relate to that one, as must many of us.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

A refreshing difference from some of his other work. I'm not really a country fan, but I sure am a Neil fan, and he did great work on this!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I like it when Neil takes his music in new directions. Of course, his "Kentucky Woman" was just as good as any of the new stuff, too. I would like to hear more of Neil's music with full orchestra accompaniment. I really loved "Stones" and "Serenade". But 'Headed for the Future" was great, too!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

A very emotive album, Neil for the first time in years seemed to have the intensity of his early seventies products. As a person, he again seemed to be one of us who understands pain and doesn't want to reconcile it with unnecessary 'happy' songs. Don't get me wrong, I love almost of Neil's songs, however, this is my honest assessment. In this album there is a lot less of "I need you to..." and "I want you to..." in the lyrics of the songs which right away makes the album feel less preachy. Neil seems a very vulnerable person after hearing this album and somehow that is very endearing. A lovely album and in my opinion right up there among the best of the 1996 lot. I always felt Neil's music had a bit of a country "flavor". I liked this album very much. Some of the songs took a while to get used to, until I learned the words and the melody - like with any new songs. Now some are favorites. I think he did a great job with most of this album - but, I am a very biased fan. I would buy any album of his sight unseen or unheard, just because it's him!. Have been a fan for 25+ yrs. My kids grew up with his music and now my one of my granddaughter's is requesting "put Diamond on Gramma" whenever we get in the car. She has learned to recognize his sound on the radio. So, the beat goes on and on and on. Can't wait for the next album, which I certainly hope is in the works 'cause that will mean he will be on tour again. His music has maintained its beauty throughout the years, and his style and sentiments have not changed much. He writes and signs BEAUTIFUL music.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Great album. Since I really like Neil Diamond and country music, this was a real treat.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It is something different than his other albums but like his other albums has a few songs that stand out by themselves. It will never equal his greatest hits, although any of his recordings are always interesting and stir something within me.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It is enough different to make Neil fresh again.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I found that I like Tenn Moon a lot more when I first heard it . . . throw open these prison walls comes to mind as one that does not improve with age. I like the "country feel" of the songs and the arrangements (high praise from someone who is NOT a country music fan.)

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I enjoy listening to this album. A couple of the songs, Gold Don't Rust and A Matter of Trust seem like they could be written for his fans. I also like the version of Kentucky Woman on this album.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I didn't expect to love this album because I am not a country music fan. I bought it anyway, since I just couldn't leave a new Neil Diamond CD in the store! I was surprised to find that I enjoyed the album very much, and it remains one of my favorites. I still don't like country music, but I do like Tennessee Moon.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This one was a long time coming - but it was well worth the wait!! Even my husband thinks it's great

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The "Tennessee Moon" album is certainly one of Neil's all time best. It is, quite simply, an amazing album with some of his best songs. The album starts off beautifully with the title tune, one of my personal favorite Neil Diamond recordings. The songs that follow are extremely well done, especially "One Good Love", "Shame", "Reminisce For A While", "Talking Optimist Blues" and "Open Wide These Prison Doors." Also, the remake of "Kentucky Woman" is a lot more fun and basically better than the original, with more feeling and enthusiasm. "Tennessee Moon" is a true treasure. Not only is it one of Mr. Diamond's best albums, it is also, by far, the best album of 1996!!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Neil recaptured the magic that had been missing from his previous projects in the 90's. This country pop album showed once again that Neil is truly an American original. He can take any genre of music on and make it a hit. That said, my extreme disappointment with this album is the lack of airplay on the radio of "Can Anybody Hear Me" and "Marry Me". The gutless radio programmers across the nation and the tepid support from Columbia/Sony share the blame. What a great album. It could have been the best ever. My how the times (and radio) have changed.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I like all Neil Diamond songs but I almost forgot I had this album until I came to this survey page.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I had a hard time getting used to the different style of music at first, but after listening to the album a few times I came to appreciate it as being just another side to Neil's wonderful musical talents.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

To me,TN Moon is one of Neil's best albums. I like nearly everything on it. It ranks right up there for me with Hot August Night, Jazz Singer, Serenade, Beautiful Noise, and J.L.S. My only problem with your survey is trying to limit my favorite songs to two! I could have chosen at least 6 as favorites.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Yes, I attended the TN Moon tapping, and it was one of the best Neil experiences ever. I loved seeing Neil at close range for several hours. It was such an intimate setting.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This is a wonderfully arranged album containing an abundance of fantastic songs. This album was a breath of fresh air because once again Neil sang from his heart and soul unlike some of his albums released in the 80s and early 90s (sorry, this is my opinion only). I think his collaboration with the Nashville musicians rejuvenated his musical juices and was by far the best collaboration he's had to date. Reminisce for a While is the only song I don't like -- the remaining songs I've listen to at least 4 or 5 times a week over the past two years and still love them. I rank this album in the top five for sure and some days I'd rank it number one.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

While I've liked Neil Diamond's music for several years, "Tennessee Moon" is the album that made me a die-hard fan! This is a little strange, because I'm usually not a country music fan. However, the music on this album really reaches out and grabs you and won't let go. It makes an emotional connection with me, beyond most other music I've heard. It is wonderful to see and hear Neil Diamond creatively at the top of his game again!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Not fair making me pick Lovescape or TM when those are my two favorite albums of all. While I love both albums, TM will always hold a special place in my heart.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

When I heard that Neil had a new CD out, I ran right out and bought it. I had caught just part of the TV. special and that's how I had heard about the new music. After purchasing the tape and CD, I jumped into my car and quickly unwrapped the tape and plugged it into the player. I must admit, I could not drive out of the store parking lot right away because I needed to clear my eyes of the tears. I will treasure this album along with all the others! Thank you, Neil.....keep up the incredible work! You're an amazing man and a blessing to us all!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The master returns to form, and if he doesn't hit it out of the park, he gets to second standing up. Some of the sharpest writing he has ever done, the most honest and self revealing album he has ever done, and most importantly, shows ND not coasting but still swinging for the fences.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I am not a big country fan....I have found I have to be in the "mood" to listen to this album.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It is very hard for me to rate Tennessee Moon against Neil's other albums because my favorite at any given time would depend on the mood I was in or what I was feeling. Neil writes words and music that touch so many feelings. His songs touch the soul in a very positive way. His voice is part of the music, he plays it like an instrument, and he plays it soooo well. I can't help feeling good every time I listen to him, no matter what song or album it is.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

There's not much in-between for me on this album: I either intensely dislike a song or love it. I didn't buy it for while, because I am not a country music fan, but after seeing the TV special, decided it wasn't so bad. At least it was Neil and it was new.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The album is more personal and down to earth than some of Neil's more recent efforts. His voice is in good shape too - apparently kicking the cigarette habit helped.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think it is a very good album. I believe it is in the top 5 of all time.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Different hearing Neil sing country. Having most of the other albums (yes albums) and CD's this has music my wife who likes country can listen to. I don't necessarily like country music.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I'VE BEEN A NEIL DIAMOND FAN SINCE THE DAY I WAS BORN HOWEVER, BEING ONLY 19, I MISSED SOME OF THE EARLY YEARS THAT MADE HIM A SUPERSTAR. AS FOR WHAT I HAVE SEEN, I'VE NEVER SEEN A NEIL ALBUM SO HEAVILY PROMOTED. IT SEEMED AS IF SONY FINALLY WOKE UP AND GAVE THIS MAN THE CREDIT HE DESERVED. TO DEBUT CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME ON THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS TO A STANDING OVATION AT THE END ALSO HELPED BOOST PROMOTION. THE ONLY THING TO UPSET ME ABOUT THE ALBUM IS THE FACT THAT MY TWO FAVORITES OF WIN THE WORLD AND OPEN WIDE THESE PRISON DOORS DIDN'T BECOME HITS. THEY HAD REAL POTENTIAL TO DO SO AND THEY NEVER RECIEVED THE PROPER PUSH. OTHER THAN THAT, THE ALBUM WAS GREAT AND BECAME ONE OF HIS BEST SELLERS IN YEARS.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Tennessee Moon is another side of Neil Diamond's remarkable talent and ability for writing wonderful lyrics.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I could not answer the question choosing between Lovescape and TM they are both great albums...

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think this is one of Neil's better albums of late. I like the fact that he went back to the basics. Neil doesn't need a big production. He at his best when he keeps it simple. His songwriting has remained solid throughout his career but this album seemed to come from the soul.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

TM is one of Neil's best albums, in great company with Beautiful Noise, the Jazz Singer and, of course, Jonathan. With TM, Neil has returned to his roots of working with a "guitar". I've always found that Neil's music had more meaning, coming from the deepest regions inside of him when he wrote with the "guitar" as compared with relying only on the "piano". TM will be one of the few albums of Neil's that people won't be able to forget. If you can put aside all of your own thoughts, you can hear and feel what Neil was going through when he put these songs together. It would be a great blessing if he would share the other cuts that didn't make the TM release.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

My personal favorite

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I really loved the whole album. I really enjoy country music (next to Neil's of course) and it was great to hear him do country. My son is getting married this summer and is going to sing "Marry Me" to his bride as she is getting ready to come down the aisle. That will surely start the tears rolling. I love everything Neil does, but really enjoyed Tennessee Moon. Hats off to Neil!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think this is one of Neil's better albums because you can tell he has put a lot of himself and his energy into it.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It is a great album just like all his others

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Even though a lot of people feel that Neil made a mistake in doing a "country album", I personally don't think of this as being a country album. To me it's pure Neil Diamond with a country a flavor! He was going through a really tough time with the marriage break-up & the divorce in process & Nashville was a good place to "camp-out" for a singer/songwriter. And what better way to deal with the pain, but to let it out via song. We hear his regrets at not being the husband that he could have been, should have been & wanted to be, but for some reason didn't. The pain which he was going through dealing with being alone after so many years with someone by his side. We hear the determination of deciding that he could & would go on. I think we all shared in the reality of what he was going through when that CD & TV Special came out in 1996. That's really when I got into his music after seeing that special & the TV interviews that happened around that time. I saw a "real person" that was not afraid to open up & admit his failures & short comings & I saw a very talented man that I have come to love & admire & appreciate.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Since I am originally from Tennessee some of the songs made me a little homesick.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Absolutely love it!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

That was not a fair question. I actually liked all the songs on the album. I was prepared to hate it since I hate country music, but he did a great job and I love all the songs. Lovescape still is one of my all time favorites.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I enjoyed the duets. I also enjoyed the country flavor of the album. I usually like most of what Neil does. He is one of the best and I have always appreciated his sharing a part of himself with the rest of us. Hope he starts touring again soon!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I DID NOT LIKE THE 'COUNTRY' FLAVOUR OF THIS ALBUM, HOWEVER I ENJOYED THE LYRICS VERY MUCH.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It was so nice to hear Neil back to his musical roots. It's a shame he had to go through a divorce for the muse to wake his songwriting, but this is some of his best songwriting in years

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

A great album made even better by the fact the he came downunder to start the world tour, songs sound & feel better live win the world is a highlight as they all are

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Tennessee Moon is a wonderful album, there's not one bad track. The great thing is that there are a few songs that are as good or better than anything he has ever done in the past, (like Blue Highway, Everybody, Talking Optimist Blues, No Limit, If I Lost My Way), and can stand up beside the classics of the past.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The trademark Diamond sincerity works well in a country setting. The songwriting collaborations seem to be just the spark Neil needed to get his creative juices going, and the results are exceptional. The duets with Buffy Lawson on "Marry Me" and Beth Nielson Chapman on "Deep Inside of You" exceed the quality of the duet with Streisand on "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." The indefatigable Diamond once again plows new ground and produces great results from his efforts!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I have been a Neil Diamond fan for just about 25 years now, no matter what type of music he is singing, "HE'S THE BEST!!" I am also a lover of country music so this album is a bonus for somebody like me. Thank you Neil and keep putting out the wonderful songs. You're the best in my book!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think it is great that Neil has been making albums for the 30 or more years. I think it is other peoples loss that they do not like Neil’s music or talent. He is a good role model for me and his song Kentucky Woman brought back allot of memories of his early years CD he put out which I listened to all the time when I was little.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This is Neil's best album in years. It's great to hear him get back to the country/pop sound he first introduced back in the early 70's, before it became so popular. I would like to have Neil release another album in this same style. It seems to fit him well at this point in his amazing career.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think its a great album!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Was hesitant at first to even listen to it because of the publicity--I knew it was a country-flavored CD, and I don't like country music. After listening to it I enjoy the CD a great deal.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

This is one of Neil's best! It shows once again that he can do everything...write, sing and compose. And Neil has a true understanding and feel for of all types of music. My favorites are Marry Me (Neil at his best), Shame, Tennessee Moon and Deep Inside of You...but only a thin line separates them from the rest. Plus the cover is easily one of Neil's coolest looking.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It's a great album because these songs are about real experiences. That's always been his best recipe for success. It's not a "commercial" album but more "personal" than some of this other attempts.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I liked this album because I've recently started listening to country music and I found it to be a good bridge of music between country and pop/rock. I thought it was a good album for Neil and I enjoyed the whole album.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I was not sure that I would like this album since I am not a country music person. I was really very pleased with the songs and of course, the singer. It was a very good album and did not sound all that country, thank goodness. However, it really makes me no difference what Neil sings, I like it all! Peggy A. Baker Neil Fan Forever

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

My first thought on hearing it was "the Masters back!" Although I did as you asked and marked two least favorites, that’s not a fair review because I like everything on the album. Different songs of course appeal at different times but overall, this is one of the best.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The release of Tennessee Moon brought Neil back to Australia and that was great to see him live again. The album itself featured some truly remarkable songs, especially Marry me, Deep inside of you, and Blue Highway. An album which shows that Neil still has what it takes.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

comments-> A very welcome change from previous albums.....loved it so much I bought 2 tapes, one for the house and one for the car!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

VERY EASILY THE BEST ALBUM NEIL HAS PUT OUT IN ABOUT A DECADE. PRETTY SOLID FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. IT SHOWS THAT HE STILL HAS MUSIC TO MAKE, THAT THERE IS STILL SOME CREATIVITY LEFT. LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM THE VERY FIRST TIME I COULDN'T HELP BUT GET GOOSE BUMPS, HE SOUNDED AS IF FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WHILE HE HAD FOUND HIMSELF AND THAT HE HAD SOMETHING TO SAY, HE WASN'T JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS. IT LEAVES HOPE FOR THE NEXT ALBUM. MAYBE EVEN BETTER YET. GO NEIL GO----

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I love Neil’s old songs, but this album suits him very well, I like the country influence.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Neil never comes up short with me, I grew up with the magic of his work, and after all these years he still works for me. I believe that Neil's music saves us from the world around us, God gave him that ability, he kissed him on the brow, then said "WRITE ON" [wink (*1=) ] -Mush

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I am a forty year old woman, and I have listened to and loved Neil Diamond since I was 12. One experience I remember very well was when I was 18 and have just moved to California with my navy husband and I bought HOT AUGUST NIGHT. After I listened to the album dancing and singing along all by myself in my apartment. I was so moved I laid down on my bed and cried. Neil has touched me inside with his music since I can remember. Tennessee Moon was certainly not that kind of experience, but I sat and was moved by almost every song

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I think it is one of the best albums he has done in a long time. It reminds me of some of his first albums.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Considerable difference in style, but still very enjoyable. Defiantly a must have in a collection

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I listen to a lot of Neil Diamond music on my commute to work. This one has a different flavor, and makes for a nice change of pace. There are also many songs on the album that have a nice sing-along quality. "Win the World" affects me as one of the saddest songs I have heard and reflects the quality of life in the late 1990's. I have spent a considerable amount of time learning about Neil and when I listen to this album, I believe it portrays his struggle between his love for his wife and his love of performing, a struggle he has never been able to resolve.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Liked the country songs very much. Hope to hear more on upcoming albums. Plus really liked the duet with Waylon Jennings, who is one of my favorite country singers. Any chance of another song with him??

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Probably the most meaningful songs our Neil has ever performed. Seem to be truly written from the heart.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Willing accept ANYTHING Neil sends my way!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Wonderful "theme" album, well written, orchestrated, many excellent songs...both music and lyrics. Appears to have been done with allot of feeling behind it. ND used the musical resources of Nashville to best advantage.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Great sound, original songs.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Its very hard to compare this album to any of his other ones, because this has a country western twang to it, and none of his others do. I will tell you that I am not a country western lover, but I do like Neil’s Album, no not better than his others but in a different way its good

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Many of the songs seem to reflect more of a sense of self content than some of the songs from the past. I like the country-western sound of it, although I truly dislike country-western music!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

All Neil’s albums are great!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

It was great!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Generally, I feel this is one of Neil's better albums. The "Country influence" to me is mostly a Neil influence. His music has consistently found a way to defy categorizing. I can find only one or two songs on this album that I do not really look forward to hearing. I anticipate his next album, given how well written this one was

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Tennessee Moon is such a different album than others Neil has done. I love all my Neil Diamond albums but it was refreshing to hear a different style and have Neil do it so well. It was difficult to pick just two favorites from all the cuts. They are all so good! By the way, did you notice my internet name, in honor of Neil the best DIAMOND ever!!!!!! We have "Hello Again" as our welcome and "I Am I Said" as our log on to the computer along with a great picture of Neil. We LOVE YOU NEIL!!!!!!!!!!!! Neil Diamond rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I love the tape as much anybody else

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Not to say that Mr. Diamond is old, but the man proves once again that he is able to produce new and fresh material. In Tennessee Moon, Neil Diamond explores his usual theme, love and all of its facets. This album truly represents some of the man's finest work. The songs are strong, with strong melodies, and Neil has taken care to make sure each one sounds right. The standouts to me are Gold Don't Rust and Reminisce for a While. The one song that I would have left out was the one that was chosen for release as a single. Though it isn't bad, Waylon just does not fit in with Neil. He seems to be trying to attempt country opera or something. Neil is just doing it like no big deal. Marry Me is special too, cause it is a wonderful wedding song. This album took the place of Live in America as my favorite. It proves to me that Neil Diamond still has it---even when the critics say he doesn't. (Headed for the Future should be next month's)

Life itself. Thanks Neil!

This was an excellent album as it is written in a period of life which I can relate to now. Being close in age, and experiencing life more, I can relate to the maturity of this album and some of life’s hurts............. I like ALL the songs. I like the album so much I bought it for several people, including my Aunt. And they liked the songs also!!!!!!! I pray Neil keeps writing and singing!!!!! as long as he can.

Tennessee Moon is the Neil of today. Yesterdays boy has become today’s man of his music. Neil's albums are like following a musical road map of his journey into music history. The best gift you can give is of yourself. By developing his talent and following his heart Neil has given his gift to the world. Neil, we thank you. (I want to write the liner notes for his next album)

A great surprise. Reminds me of Brother Love Album. Best in many a year. He should have done more of the material when in concert.

The TM album has so much depth and truly conveys so many of the feelings that I am sure Neil was experiencing at the time. Some of the songs reach your very soul and you just end up crying. I think Neil revealed his true feeling more in this album than any other he has every done.

Not the best Neil Diamond Album. But I do love the guitar work on the album and Neil seemed to have a really good time recording it. I love Beth Neilson Chapman's voice and their duet on the album is great.

I believe that the "Tennessee Moon" album is probably the best work Neil has produced. Some of his earlier work is absolutely wonderful, but considering the number of songs he as written/sung, I can honestly say that I liked every track on "Tennessee Moon" the first time that I heard it. Sometimes it takes awhile to get used to a song and really enjoy it, but there is something about each song on "Moon" that is very special and different. Neil sets the tone of this album in the lyrics of the very first track: "Hollywood don't do what it once could do."..."In search of a dream underneath a Tennessee Moon"..."touched down and she stole my heart right away". These are the words of a man who, after years of writing, singing, arranging, composing and performing, is looking for something...a dream...a new place...a new sound. In my estimation, he got his dream. Would that we could be so fortunate. This wonderful album reminds me of his early work--fresh, lively, sad, fun and new. It is just what he needed and we are the lucky ones because we get to share in his work. Neil knows us and works harder on his music because of that. He is going to have to work hard to improve on "Tennessee Moon", but I'm sure he can--he has in the past!

It's nice that Neil finally did an album of original material for a change. Up on the Roof was lousy! However, I would like to see him do a Broadway collection. It's about time!

This is a great album. Unfortunately, Neil will have difficulty getting any airplay on any new record no matter how good it is. This record is far and away his best since The Jazz Singer. Even at his peak he put out some albums that don't compare to TM. This is a fun, high quality effort. I only hope his next record shows as much enthusiasm

It was great because of the video they shot along with it that aired on TV. Not my favorite, but okay.

I am a great N.D,-Fan since I first heard Beautiful Noise over 20 years ago. Unfortunately since "Headed to the future" N.D. isn’t as brilliant anymore as in the past. I believe he should "head to the roots" again. I know that for many people the Tennessee Moon - Album is the long expected great Neil Diamond album which may be true in the USA, but in Germany Country Music isn’t so popular and this new album is defiantly not his best. But I still love his music and I am waiting for his new album and even more for him to come to Germany many greetings to all Neil Diamond Fans

I love it and so do my three girls. I took my 8 year old daughter to see him in concert in Minneapolis summer of 96 and she absolutely loved it. My 5 year old can't wait until he's back again so he can go. I also was told by a friend that the inspiration for some of the songs on Tennessee Moon came while Neil was visiting a spot on the Frying Pan River in Aspen, Colorado!!

Tennessee Moon was a pleasant surprise from Neil after not releasing new material for about 5 years or so. It was great to hear him do some hooky up tempo tunes, especially "Can anybody hear me" with it's wonderfully catchy Chorus, and the title song. Everybody ranks as one of his greatest songs in my book, with the violin solo and the section that immediately follows it (absolutely beautiful). One Good Love is his best duet since Flowers, Neil and Waylon meld very well on this well written ballad. I didn't like Matter of Love because his voice is kind of rough, that works on some tunes but not matter of love, and Optimist Blues is a bit too corny. Neil's best album in years, but then they are all great.

I didn't think Neil could do country music but I was pleasantly surprised at how good the album was. There was only a few songs that I didn't like.

Great album. I've heard it described as "Neil Diamond's new country album." Maybe it does have a countryish lean to it, but to me, it's hard to really categorize his music. it's all great

Tennessee Moon rates so highly for me because Neil has produced work that is quite different from past work. And also impressive is his collaboration with so many wonderful artists, be they singers or songwriters. It is this wonderful spirit of sharing many wonderful talents to produce such fantastic entertainment, that impresses me. thanks Neil!

This was a refreshingly unique album. I really enjoy it. From the first time I heard "Can Anybody Hear Me" I know it was bound to be a good album!

I found you had to listen to it a few times and it grew on you. now it sounds like all of Neil’s great recordings. The video helped

Tennessee Moon is compose by 17 news, beautiful and different songs, including the lovely and old "Kentucky Woman" with a new and particular orchestration, that make of this Album a really pleasure. Unfortunately this video didn't come to Portugal and I can't get it yet from USA, but by the songs that compose the Album in can imagine who is the video. With the lot of photos so beautiful in the book of the CD set we can imagine all the magic of the record in video of this lovely piece of art.

Here is a whole page of Tennessee Moon Tour Worldwide Concert Reviews, which includes reviews from most of the cities in which Neil played on the Tennessee Moon Tour. If you have a review from a city not listed, please send it to me!! Thanks.
